Working on-site with youth in the shelter in the evenings or during daytime drop-in hours (requires criminal background check)

  • Our core volunteer team is responsible for caring for the youth at Sisu alongside our staff. Volunteers are trained and vetted to work directly with the youth in our emergency shelter as well as youth who are utilizing our drop-in center. These volunteers will help check the youth in and complete any paperwork needed, help youth shop our clothing & resource closet, serve dinner, assist with laundry & chores, and prepare the youth for bedtime.

  • Working hands-on with the youth provides volunteers the opportunity to share their skills, knowledge, stories, and hearts. Youth crave connection and research proves that one caring adult can make an incredible difference in the life of a teen. Sisu is proud to offer our youth a diverse volunteer base so they are able to relate to, and see themselves in, a successful adult.

  • Volunteers wishing to work in the shelter with youth must be at least 25 years old, attend our 1.5-hour orientation and training, and complete a criminal background check.

  • Shelter volunteer shifts currently available are:

    • Daily from 4-7pm

    • Daily from 7-10pm

    • Sunday 8-10am

    • Saturday 8am-2pm

Organizing & promoting fundraising events

  • Although Sisu Youth has grown to earn grants from larger partnerships, our primary funding still comes from private donations and corporate giving. Each year, we host a variety of events and fundraisers to grow our reach and fill our coffers. If you have skills or interest in organizing, marketing, promoting, soliciting donations, or building relationships, we would love to have you on our fundraising team!

Behind the scenes - donation sorting, laundry, cleaning, thank you notes, etc.

  • If you want to get involved but think working directly with the youth may not be for you, fear not! We can definitely still use you! Youth are messy people so having adults come in to assist with cleaning, organizing, and laundry is a huge help! Writing thank you notes and other office tasks are also easier done with a team so if this is more your speed – let’s get together!

  • Specific skills: We run a tight ship – at least where the budget is concerned – so we rely on volunteers and community partners to help meet needs so that our funding can go directly to serving more youth. Let us know if you have specific skills or training that could benefit the Sisu team! Ei: legal, financial, accounting, plumbing, electrical, grant writing, building, educational, counseling, medical, etc.

  • This volunteer work can be done on your own schedule. Feel free to complete the volunteer form or reach out directly to Abigail at ajones@sisuyouth.org

Meal provider

  • Our Sisu meal team provides dinner to the youth every single night. Whether home cooked, store bought, or catered, this team volunteers to provide food for 20 youth and deliver it to the shelter. We try to avoid shellfish and pizza and provide healthy & nutritious options. We kindly ask that volunteers bring food in disposable serving dishes.
